“Baritone” Album Review By: Cameron Kent

REVIEW OF “BARITONE”

Rarely do I comment on a musician’s work because it’s such a subjective art form, but I’m making an exception because I love this album so much. “Baritone,” the latest double-album from James Vincent Carroll, is a masterpiece. Anchored by an incredible 8-string guitar handcrafted by local luthier Gray Burchette, this record has a rich, deep tone unlike anything else you’ve ever heard. The opening instrumentals on “NoiseyWorld” set the mood for what’s to come.

But it’s more than just quality musicianship that makes you want to listen to “Baritone” again and again. The real gold is mined inthe lyrics, where every song tells a story. It’s like the soundtrack to his autobiography. His words are raw, heartfelt, and sometimes haunting. (There’s even a song called “Haunting.”)But in nearly every song is the undercurrent of hope, for a better life and a better world. A lyric from “Good Man” highlights that theme. “I’ve been busted up and broken… the work is never done.”

If I had to choose a favorite track, it would be “Time Traveler.” It sums up this entire album… a journey by a lifelong singer/songwriter who has seen hard times and good times, and always looks to a brighter future for all of us. Well done, JVC. I’ll keep playing “Baritone” till the grooves wear out.
